Dr Thompson and his team publish world-first study of MRI in Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer

Dr Thompson published a landmark, world-first study in the prestigious American journal The Journal of Urology demonstrating the value of serial multi-parametric MRI Scans in men undergoing close surveillance for prostate cancer. The study represents the culmination of 8 years work, having been initiated by Dr Thompson and his co-senior author Professor Stricker in 2012.

The study demonstrates that adding MRI to the surveillance regimen for men who have tiny low-grade prostate tumours could enable the small minority who harbour an occult aggressive tumour to be identified and treated earlier, whilst reducing the frequency of biopsies for all the other men who don’t need a biopsy.

Cutting edge research requires a team effort; Dr Thompson is grateful to the large team of urologists, radiologists, pathologists, research fellows, nurses, data collectors and most importantly the men living with prostate cancer who kindly agreed to participate in this world-leading research which will improve the lives of future men with prostate cancer.

New Study proves that Tool estimating individuals' risk of prostate cancer based on MRI etc (developed by Dr Thompson and team) performs as well or even better than any similar tools worldwide
